CABOT — The Conway senior high girls and junior high boys cross country teams won their conference meets, held recently in Cabot.

The girls won the conference with only eight runners, three of whom moved up from junior high last year.

The girls took the 7A Central title. Avery Tribett paced the Lady Cats, finishing in second place with a time of 20 minutes, 22 seconds.

Sara Holman, Kate Freyaldenhoven and Lauren Campbell rounded out the top four finishers for the Lady Cats finishing third, fifth and sixth respectively.

“This team is a special group of girls,” coach Lisa Worlow said. “They strive to get better with each meet. They have the desire to develop a strong team, no matter the size. This attitude along with their work ethic makes them champions.”

The junior high boys finished their season undefeated in eight meets this year. The team was led by Cade Swindle, and features runners Ty Wingfield, Andrew Harrison, Carraig Craun, Ethan Kailey, Gunter Campbell, Ian Bush, Garrett Pendergraft and John Sutton. The junior team is a combination of eighth- and ninth-graders, and also has a home-schooled student.

“This season has been very inspiring to see the future we have in Conway cross country,” Worlow said. “These boys have worked hard every day and pushed each other to stay focused and motivated. We expect big things from this group in the upcoming years.”

The senior high boys team, plaqued by injuries, finished fourth in the conference. Cade Griffith and Jonah Willis finished 19th and 20th respectively and were the top runners in the conference meet. Other runners for the boys wereiCaleb Vines, Brandon Hutchins, Sean McKenna, Bryan Pendergraft, Cooper Tribett, Jack Campbell and Kerry Kelly.

“The enthusiasm this team has, not only running but in life itself, is great to be around,” Worlow said.

Worlow also acknowledged managers Brooke Glover and Caleb Crow, who missed the season with an injury. Crow is a runner that has been plagued by an injury that has forced him to sit out the season.

Worlow said the junior high girls team earned personal records at each meet.

“We have a couple girls that are new to cross country, so for them to work this hard and find a joy in running is the main goal,” she said.

Worlow said Sara Holman earned top honors at several of the junior meets this season. Carly Umholz was another top runner.

Holman, Umholz and Maddie Meeks were able to compete with the senior girls team at conference. Worlow said other key runners were Echo Pinard, Elizabeth Acree and Ella Baumgarten.

The senior high teams will compete at the state meet Saturday at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.
