Three overtimes, a comeback gives Conway a 100-95 victory

It took a fourth quarter comeback and three overtime for Conway to finally knock off West Memphis as part of the John Stanton Classic at Buzz Bolding Arena in a 100-95 win. The Wampus Cats took its first lead of the game in the third quarter, but West Memphis quickly erased that lead, eventually going up 70-64 with 2:54 left in regulation. Despite several Conway players being in foul trouble, the team kept its hands back and stepped into the passing lanes, which helped the Wampus Cats claw their way back into the game. Conway eventually tied the game at 70, forcing overtime. Looking to complete the comeback and put its portion of the John Stanton Classic to bed, Wampus Cat senior guard Kylen Milton to hit Conway’s final shot of overtime with 22.2 seconds left and gave the Wampus Cats a 78-74 lead. However, a basket by junior forward Chris Moore closed the gap with 10.6. And then, a Conway turnover gave West Memphis the ball back, leading to another Moore basket at the buzzer to force a second overtime. It didn’t take Moore long to pick up his fifth foul of the contest, leading to other Blue Devils to make up for Moore’s production as he scored 35 before exiting the game. The player that picked up Moore’s production was junior guard Immanuel Hoard as he forced the third overtime after Conway had grabbed another lead. His shot with four seconds left on the clock left little time for the Wampus Cats to take control of this game and put it to rest. Instead of getting it done in the second overtime, Conway would not be denied a win as it finally put its opponent away as a pair of reserves for coach Salty Longing led the charge in senior forward Jakilyn Kaiser and senior guard Lerome Thompson tallied the Wampus Cats’ final 11 points, while West Memphis scored just six, leading to a 100-95 victory. Conway struggled to maintain a lead when it had it through much of the game and third quarter foul trouble led to a 57-51 deficit after the third quarter. The Wampus Cats defense held the Blue Devils to just 13 points in the fourth quarter while Conway scored 19 to even it up at 70. Moore’s 35 points led all scoreres, followed by Milton’s 26 points. Milton was followed on Conway by Kaiser’s 20 points, junior Caleb London’s 13 points, senior guards Terry Clardy’s and Christian Williams’ 11. Following Moore on West Memphis was Hoard and senior guard Cavin Paige’s 16 points, senior forward Terry Burgress’ 13 and senior guard Corliss Brewer’s 10. Conway’s next game will take place during a post-Christmas tournament, starting Dec. 27 in the Bad Boy Mowers Tournament.
