Conway rallies in fourth, stops Cabot in overtime

CABOT -- Conway didn't mind playing past the fourth quarter for the second time this season. The Wampus Cats were able to leave Panther Stadium with a come-from-behind 34-28 victory over Cabot. Senior quarterback Jovoni Johnson's 2-yard run in overtime was the difference for the Wampus Cats. "It's all a team effort," Conway Coach Keith Fimple said. "I'm real proud of all of them." Johnson finished 12 of 20 for 261 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He also rushed for 133 yards and 4 touchdowns on 21 carries. Conway (5-1, 2-1 7A-Central), which won 48-41 in two overtimes against El Dorado in its season opener Aug. 24, overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit to Cabot. Johnson's 81-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nick Richmond down the left sideline with 3:57 left tied the game at 28-28. Richmond led Conway's receivers with 4 receptions for 120 yards and 1 touchdown. The Wampus Cats had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but junior Will Hogue's 43-yard field goal attempt was wide left with one second remaining. Cabot got the ball first in overtime. However, on fourth and goal at the Conway 3, senior running back TJ Rogers was stopped a yard short. Johnson dove past the goal line on third and goal for the touchdown. Hogue's extra point attempt was no good to leave the final deficit at six points. Cabot Coach Mike Malham came on the field to argue with officials about Rogers' last run, to no avail. "We thought he got in," Malham said. "It's a game of inches. Close calls, either way. We didn't get either one of them, I know that." The loss leaves Malham with 299 career victories, good for second all-time in state history behind Frank McClellan at Barton. Cabot has not won since a 27-7 victory at El Dorado on Sept. 7. For Cabot (2-4, 0-3), junior quarterback Jesse Windemaker completed 5 of 7 passes for 75 yards and 3 touchdowns, all to Rogers. Two of the scoring passes came in the first half as the Panthers built a 21-7 lead before halftime. Rogers accounted for 154 yards offensively, including 98 rushing on 11 carries and 56 receiving on 4 catches.
