Conway runs away from Jonesboro in 37-16 win

The Conway Wampus Cats started 3-0 for the first time since 2014 after their 37-16 win over the Jonesboro Hurricane in Jonesboro. The two teams have battled over the last few years with Conway being the winner in six of the last seven matchups. In the first two weeks, Conway has earned the moniker of the Cardiac Cats after a double overtime 48-41 victory over El Dorado and a 24-21 win over Bentonville last week, where the Wampus Cats had to come back from 18 points midway through the third quarter. The Wampus Cats started their opening drive after a touchback and ran the clock down, eventually scoring on senior Cary McClain’s 9-yard touchdown with 8:42 left in the first quarter. Jonesboro would start their possession at their 28 before they would eventually answer with a 37-yard field goal by senior kicker Garrett Childers. Both teams stalled out on their next drive. Conway junior Will Hogue couldn’t hit form 46 yards ou on another drive, but the Wampus Cats would strike again when Hogue redeemed himself with a 41-yard field goal, making the score 10-3 with 2:44 left in the second quarter. The Hurricane would tie the game late in the first half when sophomore quarterback Jumper Cross threw a 30-yard touchdown pass. Conway would answer on junior Shane Smith’s 99-yard kickoff return for touchwon for a 17-10 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter. After another Hogue field goal from 31 yards out with 7:15 left in the third quarter. The Hurricane would pull within four when Jumper completed a 17-yard touchdown to senior Tate Lutes. A failed extra point on a bad snap, left Jonesboro down 20-16 with 3:02 left in the game. Another Hogue field goal from 38 yards out gave Conway a 23-16 lead with 9:23 left in the game. The Wampus Cats would add another score when McClain punched it in from four yards out. Conway senior safety would intercept Jumper before he would again pick off Jumper for a 52-yard pick six, making the score 37-16. The Wampus Cats are on a bye next week before returning to competition against Fort Smith Southside on Sept. 21.
