Conway gets first win with Fimple

In a thrilling 48-41 double overtime thriller, the Conway Wampus Cats picked up coach Keith Fimple’s first win with the team Friday night at home. The game was a battle throughout, with neither team giving the other much room. The teams traded leads for much of the game, with El Dorado attempting to take the lead and possibly seal a victory over its 7A foe in Conway and spoil Fimple’s debut when junior quarterback Alex Hicks connected with junior wide receiver Steven Tollette on a 14-yard touchdown to tie the game at 34 with 1:49 left in the game. However, a missed extra point by Wildcats junior kicker Greyson Hubbard left the ball in the Wampus Cats’ hands for the final drive of the game. Everything seemed to be going Conway’s way, starting the drive at its 32-yard line and driving down to El Dorado’s 15-yard line. The Wampus Cats were ready to strike in the waning seconds of the game when senior running back Cary McClain, who led all rushers with 169 yards on 20 carries, fumbled while trying to run out the rest of the clock and give Conway a shot at a last second field goal. Instead, the Wildcats recovered and kneeled to take the game into overtime. The Wampus Cats elected to give El Dorado the ball first. The Wildcats struck on the first play from scrimmage when Hicks connected with senior tight end Alex Boone for a 10-yard touchdown, taking a 41-34 lead.
