Wampus Cat Sports Hall of Fame has a list of induction candidates

The Wampus Cat Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors met recently to pare the master list of all eligible candidates down to a manageable number to send to the booster club. Our by-laws allow for us to select between 20 to 40 names to form the annual voting list. Since the Hall of Fame is brand new, and there are many who are worthy of consideration, it was all we could do to get down to just 40, but we did it. At the beginning of September, all members of the Wampus Cat Booster Club will be sent a ballot and short bios on all 40 possible inductees. They will have two months to return the ballots to be counted. From that voting list of 40, booster club members will rank their top six choices, in order. First place is worth six points, second place is worth five points, on down to sixth place worth one point. In in early November, votes will be totaled and the top vote-getter from the booster club balloting is automatically the first inductee. The board will use the results of the booster club tally to then finalize the class of inductees, ensuring that it is a good representation of different sports and eras. The voting list the board compiled is quite impressive. There are players from the 1940's to the 2000's. Sports represented include football, basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, golf, swimming, cross-country and track & field. There are well over a dozen state championships represented with various coaches. There are names most fans will recognize and some that may have been forgotten over the course of time. There are some names you might have expected to see, but are not there. Because there is such a backlog of candidates, our by-laws call for a 25-year waiting period from graduation for male athletes and a 10-year waiting period for females. Current coaches are not eligible, and there are a few on campus who will certainly be considered once they retire. To avoid any conflicts, members of the WCSHOF board are not eligible. And there are definitely several on our committee you will see on the voting list after they roll off. And so, if you have not already skipped ahead to the end of this article to see the 40 finalists, here they are, in alphabetical order: Whitney Allison, Joe Baldridge, Buzz Bolding, Raymond Bright, Jeff Courtway, Marvin Delph, Clifton Ealy, Dennis Fulmer, Joe Graham, Herman Hammons. Henry Hawk, Melissa Henderson, Don Henley, Tim Horton, Julie Jiskra, Rick Kersey, Greg Lasker, Rex Lovell, Tom Mabry, Mike Neuhofel. Mike New, Bill Nutter, Don Owen, Jim Owen, Wilbur Owen, Jeff Pascoe, J.B. Pendergraft, Lawson Pilgrim, Robbie Robinson, Ernest Ruple. Kenny Smith, David Spatz, Gary Standefer, Ken Stephens, C.D. Taylor, Dandra Thomas, T.J. Ticey, Johnny Tyler, Mike Wiley and Robert Wright. That’s quite a list. It is not too late to join the booster club to vote.
