Conway volleyball hopes to build on successful tradition

With the season starting Tuesday, the Conway Lady Cats volleyball team got a glimpse into their season with the annual Volleyball Showcase on Saturday at Buzz Bolding Arena. Coach Laura Crow said the team is ready to go. “The girls have worked really hard and we’ve gone to a couple team camps and some scrimmages Thursday night,” she said. “They all played really well there. I feel like defensively and passing-wise, I feel like we are very strong. We’re working on our offense right now and for our hitters to be able to place the ball and put the ball down. “We’ll get there, though. We’re kind of young right now in our hitters. We graduated a couple of all-state hitters last year, so we’re trying to get those spots filled. The girls are stepping up, though.” After last season, Conway lost four players to graduation, including all-state players Aly Brinkley and Anna Lee Drennan. “I think our middles are going to be strong this year,” she said. “Right now, we have Kendahl Davenport running middle and Marlee Scaife, and both of those girls are returning varsity players. Our outsides are kind of a toss-up between three of them. They are all doing a good job; we’re just working with them right now to be a little more aggressive and consistent on their shots.” Crow said the competition will be tough in the 7A Central, but she has gotten a glimpse of other teams. “We’ve seen some of the teams at camps already,” she said. “Cabot is going to be tall and have a good blocker when we play them. North Little Rock will be solid. “We split with them at the Benton team camp, and they’re going to be good this year. Mount St. Mary will be good, and so will Northside and Southside, and traditionally, they have pretty solid programs. It will be a good year with a lot of good competition.”
