Panthers score early and often against Conway

Just about everything that could go wrong for the Conway Wampus Cats baseball team did go wrong in Thursday’s 14-2 loss to Cabot in six innings at Wampus Cat Field, the second straight for the Cats. The loss put Conway (13-7, 6-4) out of contention for the 7A Central title. The Cats fell to fourth place, trailing Cabot by four games, North Little Rock two and Bryant by one . The game started off with what should have been an easy out on a grounder to second base, turned into an error that led to Cabot’s (18-6, 10-0 7A Central) first run of the game. Things didn’t get much easier for Conway (13-7, 6-4 7A Central) senior starting pitcher Cade Tucker as he gave up two straight RBI doubles before finally getting an out on a double play on a baserunning mistake by Cabot. The Panthers scored one more run before the inning finished on a groundout. Before Conway had a chance to bat, Cabot posted a four-run lead. The Wampus Cats walked twice in the bottom half of their inning, but couldn’t push across any runs. The Panthers didn’t score in the second, but were again plating runs in the third inning, taking a 9-0 lead. Conway senior Kolby Reck registered the Wampus Cats’ first hit with two outs in the third, but Conway couldn’t push him across. However, the Wampus Cats cut the lead to eight in the fourth after Tucker doubled to lead off the inning and then, junior Jordan Wicks singled up the middle. This left Conway in a 9-1 deficit after four innings. Cabot responded with five runs on six hits, putting the score at 14-1 before the Wampus Cats scored in their final at bat. Cabot senior Logan Gilbertson picked up the win, giving up two earned runs on five hits, two walks and striking out four batters across all six innings. Tucker picked up the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and one wild pitch in two innings of work. On an adjacent field, Cabot’s softball team took a 10-0 victory over the Lady Cats.
