Wampus Cats Advance in State Tournament

Three Faulkner County teams advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday in state basketball tournaments at various sites in the state. Conway’s boys moved on the the 7A tourney, Guy-Perkins’ boys scored 102 points in coasting in the 1A tournament and Mount Vernon-Enola girls led almost wire to wire in a victory the the 1A girls tournament. Because the 7A tournament ran behind schedule after an overtime contest in the first game, the Conway girls got a late start against Har-Ber and was not complete by Log Cabin deadline. Results will be posted online and in Friday’s newspaper. Conway boys The Wampus Cats (12-13) followed the game play almost to perfection in moving to the 7A quarterfinals with a dominating, 48-34 victory over Fayetteville (12-15) at Van Buren. The Cats moved to a 5:30 p.m. Thursday game against North Little Rock, the 7A Central champion. They did it by taking advantage of a height advantage, both offensively and defensive with Gentrell Taylor and Blake Bradshaw doing most of the damage. “We have been preaching all year attacking the basket early and often,” said Conway coach Will Johnson. “We just didn’t do it early; we did it the entire game. I’m proud of our guys for realizing we had a size advantage and sticking to the game plan. “It’s kind of an old-school way to play but I have always thought the game is played inside-out.” The Cats outscored the Bulldogs, 15-4, in the third quarter to stretch a 21-15 halftime lead to 36-19. Their biggest lead was 18 points. Conway was 20 of 28 from the free-throw line with Carson Petrucelli hitting six straight in the final quarter to turn back a Fayetteville run.
